Okinawa: The island with the highest life expectancy

Okinawa is an island which belongs to Japan. On this island the life expectancy is the highest in the world. A remarkable thing is that heart and vascular diseases and cancer hardly exist on Okinawa. Investigation has pointed out that the inhabitants of Okinawa have a particular lifestyle, which has a considerable influence on the high life expectation.

The most remarkable thing on the eating habits on Okinawa is that the people bring much variation into their diet. Okinawans eat at least 15 different foods per day. Their diet is also rich in flavonoids, which are compounds that have qualities to fight cancer.

The Okinawa lifestyle has the following guidelines. Okinawans eat:

  • at least tree calcium rich foods per day.
  • only whole-wheat grain products.
  • foods which are rich in Omega 3/6/9 fatty acids.
  • 10 different kinds of fruits and vegetables per day.
  • less meat; however, fish is okay.

They drink a lot of water and tea. They are more moderate with alcohol and most Okinawans completely avoid alcohol.
